"Crisis of Care"
Helping Families Help Children
FACTS
In the United States:
- At least 7.5 million children (12% of those under the age of 18) have a
diagnosable psychological disorder. Less than 1 in 5 receive help.
- Between 4 and 5 thousand children are placed out of their own states each year
in residential treatment facilities, despite demonstrated effectiveness of community-based
services.
- The mental health delivery system for children and their families deals
primarily with crises. Nearly 90% of the resources are consumed by only 2% of the children
who need help.
SOLUTIONS
"Crisis of Care is a positive, solutions oriented documentary examining
the mental health delivery system for children and their families. The program provides a
clear and comprehensive blueprint for action, focusing on services that emphasize
prevention, early intervention, and interagency collaboration. A broad continuum of
service options for children with emotional disturbance and their families is described
and presented. The documentary's primary voice comes from children, parents and front line
care givers.
The documentary, winner of a CINE Golden Eagle Award, was produced by N.A.K.
Production Associates. The project was administered by The Nicholas Group, a special
committee of the American Re-EDucation Association.
